Business etiquette,
What to bear in mind when you’re in Beijing/China on business:
Clothing: Classic for men, e.g. a dark suit, white shirt, red tie. For women, a dark suit or trouser suit is a good choice.
Greetings: A light handshake is becoming increasingly accepted in China. Make sure that it really is only a light handshake, as a firm handshake could be seen as impolite.
Business cards: Take plenty of business cards with you and give them out everywhere and to everyone. Giving a card is always done with both hands, as is the receiving of someone’s business card. And of course, if possible a translated version of your business card is a good idea.
Small talk: Politeness is very important in China, so it’s vital to engage in small talk before negotiations. Talk about your journey, about your business partner’s company building etc. It’s important to stay friendly and neutral! Although human rights and Tibet are no longer taboo subjects, they are not small talk topics and should be left to conversations when you are better acquainted.
Negotiations: Even in negotiations politeness plays an important role. You will not see something rejected with a simple “no”. However, a “yes” also does not mean that the point has really been accepted. You will notice this when some supposedly accepted points are once again brought up and discussed the next day.
Internet: You can get Internet access (WLAN or cable) in practically every hotel in Beijing and even in many coffee house chains. However, you will not be able to access all websites because of censorship, but this should not interfere with your work.
