Drinking alcohol on a business dinner,

When invited to a business dinner in Germany it is usual to drink wine or beer. Still, one should not drink more than two glasses and ensure that they drink enough water with it.

Drinking hard liquor might be suggestive of one being frivolous, though, drinking a "verdauerli" (a hard liquor that is served after finishing the meal to support the digestion) is common.

Important info for lunch: There is a saying in Germany "Kein Bier vor vier", meaning that it is inappropriate to drink before four o'clock pm. So if you aren't sure about your collegues attitude, better not order alcohol .

By the way: Of course one is never forced to drink alcohol on a business dinner. A simple "No, thank you." Is absolutely sufficient. Don't feel like you have to explain yourself.
